Arguments About The Low Carb Diet

There have been a lot of arguments about the so-called low carb diet program. Some people attest to its effectiveness when it comes to losing weight. Others claim that this program does not work, particularly for people who do regular exercises.
Both sides have their own beliefs for making their respective claims. Still, those supporting low carb diet programs have an obvious upper hand in this dispute. Health-wise, it has been proven that low carbohydrate intake plays a crucial role in insulin control. If you know your science books, you should be aware that insulin and its proper maintenance is essential in having good health when losing weight.
As for carbohydrates and exercise, however, a minor disagreement still exists. This is because many fitness buffs often find a low carbohydrate intake an unacceptable element of their exercise routine. They believe low carbohydrates make them less energetic. They say this leads to poor performances, particularly in exercises where their endurance is put to a test.
In this regard, two studies made during the 80’s are worth examining. These studies sought to determine if low carbohydrates have significant effects on the performance of athletes. One study placed their subject-respondents on a reduced carb diet for six weeks while the other one had their subjects on a similar diet, but under shorter four-week duration.
Both studies revealed that initially, the subjects experienced lethargy. Yet, after six and four weeks respectively, these respondents did not show a significant difference in their endurance performance. It was found out that these athletes found an alternate energy source, fat. Their bodies consequently burned these fats and served their energy needs.
What those studies indicate is that human bodies need time to adapt to sudden alterations in eating habits. This becomes particularly true if these habits have been practiced for years.
During this so-called adjustment period, it is but natural to feel lethargic. This feeling though is normal and temporary. In time, this will go away, and you may even reach that point where you are more energetic than before. This seems to be the conclusion inferred from the above studies, particularly the study duration that lasted for six weeks. In that study alone, the athletes actually showed increased endurance in their exercise routines. However, not enough data were presented to indicate that this so-called increase was due to the low carb diet that accompanied their fitness regimen.
In any case, these studies are crucial for those who advocate the low carb diet plan not only as a weight loss regimen, but also as a way of increasing performance levels of athletes.
